I got so excited when I read the synopsis of A Blade So Black that I almost flipped my table. McKinney’s debut novel, released this September, is a modern retelling of Alice in Wonderland. Instead of falling through a rabbit hole during a tea party in England, this Alice enters a nightmare realm called Wonderland whenever she sleeps. Alice has to quickly learn how to defend herself in Wonderland, where she must battle for her life against monstrous creatures. While she isn’t sleeping, Alice is a regular teenage girl in Atlanta, Georgia and must juggle overprotective parents, school, and best friends.
I’m so excited that this Alice in Wonderland retelling isn’t yet another blonde girl going through a barely-changed variation of the classic. This genuinely sounds like a fresh take on the story, and dream walking is one of my all-time favorite tropes. Most importantly, it’s essential for young girls of color to be able to read stories where they see themselves as the protagonist that saves the day in a magical adventure. I’m glad that I stumbled upon this book on Goodreads, and I can’t wait to get my hands on it and check it out.
